Biggest order in MANN+HUMMEL company history

Electromobility with MANN+HUMMEL   o High double-digit million dollar order for battery frames o Large-scale production with approx. 160,000 frames per day o New production plant in preparation

Ludwigsburg, 14th September 2011 - MANN+HUMMEL has received the largest order in the history of the company for the field of electromobility. A renowned North American vehicle manufacturer has commissioned the development partner and series supplier to the international automotive industry to supply up to 160,000 battery frames per day. The series start is planned for 2014. MANN+HUMMEL will build a new plant for the order. The location of the new plant is still to be finalised.

"This order is strategically important for us and we are proud that our customer has placed his trust in us", says Manfred Wolf, President and General Manager Automotive + Industrial Business. MANN+HUMMEL is already active in the area of electromobility and also supplies battery frames for the Opel Ampera and GM Volt cars.

Depending on the type of vehicle and battery concept, the number of frames per battery varies from below 100 to approx. 300 frames. " Whether for vehicles with conventional or alternative drive systems - with our multi-strategy we are going in the right direction." explains Wolf. "This order was made possible through our convincing production expertise and cost efficiency." The cost factor and driving range are important factors for success with electric vehicles.

Design for manufacturing and design to cost mean that costs and manufacturing considerations are important at a very early stage in the product development process. The actual requirements in this case are for reliable high volume series production, short cycle times, injection moulding of very flat but very long parts, high component cleanliness, high sealing characteristics and cost efficiency.

MANN+HUMMEL has been producing intake manifolds and air cleaner systems in plastic in high volumes for decades and has the required tool and processing expertise together with extensive experience with cycle times and cost reduction. The company will produce the new plastic frames with an extremely short cycle time. Given the high volume, each second saved also saves money for the customer.

A second important cost factor is usually the required component cleanliness. If the battery frame is contaminated, for example by dust particles from the ambient air or from the packaging material, a possible result could be a leakage.
For decades MANN+HUMMEL has been developing and producing very reliable oil and fuel filter systems which protect the engine from contaminants. This experience enabled the company to offer an alternative to the initially required clean room which ensures the required component cleanliness and is much less expensive than a clean room.

Every year, MANN+HUMMEL invests approximately 4% of sales in research and development, which is well above the regional average of 2.6%. Part of the research budget is devoted to concepts, products and technology for alternative drive vehicles. The company is currently undertaking more than 10 projects in the electro-mobility field. At the same time, the filtration specialists continue to focus on optimising solutions for the combustion engine, which will remain the basis for individual and commercial mobility for many years to come. The focus in research and development has always been to offer sustainable and environmentally-friendly products. Respect for people and the environment is an essential corporate value.

In the years from 1999 to 2010 the company group had an annual average growth of 9% and by 2018 wants to increase turnover to 3.4 billion euros. This will be made possible through organic growth and acquisitions. This substantial order for battery frames for electric cars underlines the competitiveness and innovative ability of MANN+HUMMEL and allows the company to grow further.
