VarioPleat revolutionizes air filter elements - R&D project from MANN+HUMMEL
Ludwigsburg, 11th September 2013 - Variable pleat height is the brilliant idea behind a new innovative air filter element MANN+HUMMEL is currently developing for air cleaners. This unique product is easy to adapt to different types of installation space, offers low pressure drop and a higher dust holding capacity than before. The market launch is expected in two or three years.
In terms of the pleat height, the new air filter element concept is technically far superior to anything currently available on the market. The new product will be used in air intake systems of combustion engines mainly used in the industry and in commercial vehicles.
’Our new concept shows that there is still considerable potential to further improve the design of air filter elements’, says Dr. Michael Heim, Director Engineering Air Filter Elements at MANN+HUMMEL.’ We are currently experiencing a enormous leap in innovation.’
VarioPleat will be advantageous for all air cleaner concepts where the air flows through the air filter element axially without significant deflections. In contrast to conventional elements with this design, the variable pleat height enables much better exploitation of the available installation space than previously. Large pleat steps are therefore possible as well as smooth transitions. Hence, the filter element can be perfectly adapted to the installation space and to interfering contours such as the wheel arch or other components in the engine compartment.
At the same time VarioPleat is characterized by a lower pressure drop than other concepts based on an axial flow. MANN+HUMMEL uses a cellulose filter medium with the option of additional MANN+HUMMEL nanofiber technology (MICROGRADE A-NF).
The series production of the new air filter element requires the development of a new production technology. The basis for this has been provided by the excellent work of an interdisciplinary team at MANN+HUMMEL comprising experts for material development, production technology, design and process engineering.
