Ready to enter the European water market

Starting from Asia, MANN+HUMMEL extends its water business to Europe. Target customers are industries and organisations with a demand for high quality process water or waste water cleaned with ultrafiltration. The filtration specialist has transferred its extensive experience over many years in automotive filtration to a new skid design for the ultrafiltration of water on the basis of membrane modules with a highly developed flow geometry. The company group plans to use this extension to its product portfolio to open up new application areas and customer groups.

Ludwigsburg, 25th October 2011 - The next milestone in the MANN+HUMMEL growth and diversification strategy is the European water market. The filtration specialist with its headquarters in Ludwigsburg;Germany, will use Aquatech 2011 in Amsterdam to present its advanced water filtration solutions in Europe for the first time. "The international exhibition is the ideal platform to launch our new products to an international audience and to officially start our expansion in the European water treatment market", says Josef Parzhuber, Group Vice President Water Business. "Water is one of our strategic segments. We are transfering our 70 years of experience in filtration over to new applications so that with the aid of new technology we can open up new business areas and thus reduce our economic dependence on the automotive sector."
In Amsterdam, the group presents new products for water filtration. A new modular skid design can integrate up to fifty filter modules. The newly developed modular design with improved flow geometry is compact and has a highly integrated design. This reduces material costs, saves space, reduces energy consumption, and increases the throughput volume, leading to a higher filtration performance. The timing of the module cleaning process with efficient rinsing and air scouring is fine-tuned to the specific application and reduces energy consumption and use of chemical cleaning agents used to regenerate the membrane.
MANN+HUMMEL has expanded its product portfolio with a membrane made from polyether sulfon (PES). The filtration specialist can thereby open up new application areas in water filtration which have higher requirements regarding temperature and chemical stability, e.g. the food and beverages industry and the field of biotechnology. In combination with an improved flow geometry and new modular design, the membrane offers a longer service life under standard and extreme operating conditions. Depending on the specific requirements with regard to lifetime and operating conditions, membranes made from PES and PAN (polyacrylnitril) find application.
MANN+HUMMEL runs two R&D sites to develop membranes for water treatment: at its Ludwigsburg (Germany) corporate headquarters and in Singapore, at the headquarters of the water filtration division. The team in Germany focuses on new filtration membranes and technologies and the team in Asia takes care of local application development. Overall development goals are to further increase ultrafiltration performance, expand the product portfolio through use of new materials for additional application areas, and simultaneously to reduce energy consumption.
"The growing world population, increasing industrialisation, and stricter environmental requirements are all leading to an increased demand for clean water and the necessity to recycle water in order to complete the water cycle," explains Parzhuber. "In Europe, we derive advantages from the strong presence of our group and the high brand awareness we enjoy. An excellent starting point! Based on this we are developing our water business and addressing customers which require high quality water or recycled water. A special focus is on the pretreating (ultrafiltration) of sea water prior to subsequent desalination (reverse osmosis)."
The filtration market has a worldwide volume of around 40 billion euros, of which automotive and non-automotive related applications account for only approximately 23%. Machine and power plant construction account for around 9%. Water treatment amounts to almost a quarter of the total market volume, with this showing a strong upward trend. MANN+HUMMEL plans to turn that potential into business and also to explore new fields of application."
MANN+HUMMEL plans to increase its sales to 3.4 billion euros (2010: 2.18 billion euros) by 2018. The percentage of sales for the non-automotive business is expected to grow more than the equivalent figure for the automotive business, which is currently at around 87%. The automotive series production, the automotive aftermarket and the non automotive sectors are each set to account for a third of the group turnover.
