MANN+HUMMEL enlarges footprint

German-based filtration specialist MANN+HUMMEL increased its Chinese sales by 20% in 2011 and plans further growth. The group invests in personnel and further production capacity. MANN+HUMMEL currently has four production sites in China and offers automotive and industrial filtration solutions including water filtration systems to major customers in the Chinese market. The market generates approx. half of the company's Asian turnover and plays a significant role in the growth strategy of the group.

Ludwigsburg/Shanghai, 1st June, 2012 – The German-based filtration specialist MANN+HUMMEL is focusing strongly on the Chinese market. With more than 70 years of filtration expertise, the group develops and manufactures filtration solutions for automotive, industrial and water-related applications. The company is a development partner and series supplier to all major automotive and industrial manufacturers worldwide. The family-owned company serves the automotive and industrial aftermarket under its MANN-FILTER brand. MANN-FILTER is one of the most valuable and reliable filter brands in the world.

China is one of the strategic growth markets for MANN+HUMMEL. In the last decade, MANN+HUMMEL's Chinese business increased by a factor of thirty. In 2011, around 1,100 employees in China generated about half of the group's Asian turnover. It is the goal of the group to continue the Chinese-German success story and to increase the Asian share of the group sales from 17% today up to 25% by 2018. Group sales are expected to achieve at least 3.4 billion euros.

The headquarters of MANN+HUMMEL China are located in Jiading/Shanghai. The Jiading location opened in 2010 and is the flagship of the group. It is the home of MANN+HUMMEL (CHINA) CO. LTD. and MANN+HUMMEL FILTER (SHANGHAI) CO. LTD. and integrates a production site, R&D centre for localisation and new development, warehouse, sales, communications, HR and all other business functions. It is part of the Chinese R&D and production network. Products include engine air cleaner systems, oil and fuel filters, cabin air filters, crankcase ventilation systems, intake manifolds, technical plastic parts and MANN-FILTER products for the Chinese aftermarket.

Jinan is home of MANN+HUMMEL FILTER (Jinan) CO. LTD. The company primarily supplies the MANN+HUMMEL customer China National Heavy Duty Truck Corporation (CNHTC). CNHTC is one of the largest manufacturers of heavy duty trucks in China. To increase customer orientation and strengthen localisation activities, MANN+HUMMEL has recently upgraded the company by establishing a new assembly line of injection moulding machines for air cleaners. The injection process complies with the MANN+HUMMEL global production standards and provides proven liability. The new line is expected to raise the production capacity of the Jinan plant to 200,000 air cleaners per year.

MANN+HUMMEL runs a joint venture in Changchun in the province of Jilin, the CHANGCHUN MANN+HUMMEL FAWAY FILTER CO. LTD. Business has developed very well and an expansion of the plant is needed. At the end of May 2012, the company celebrated the groundbreaking for a new plant with 25,000 m2 which will replace the current plant. In Changchun, MANN+HUMMEL mainly produces filter and crankcase ventilation systems for trucks in the local market. Changchun is the group's largest plant for fuel pre filter systems. Customers include local and Western automotive and industrial companies in China. In order to handle the expected growth, MANN+HUMMEL will expand the product range at Changchun for industrial customers. The department for R&D will strengthen its activities and provide additional local applications for the Chinese market.

MANN+HUMMEL’s most recent Chinese highlight is a new production site in Liuzhou in the south of China, opened on May 31, 2012 and assigned to the Chinese headquartes in Shanghai. The new plant will manufacture air cleaners, intake manifolds and technical plastic parts for the automotive series production. It will enable the company to faster serve Chinese customers in the south. Today, SGM-Wuling – a leading manufacturer in the Chinese mini-van market currently expanding its business into the passenger cars segment and increasing its presence in overseas markets – is the main customer of the Liuzhou plant. Liuzhou allows the filtration specialist to notably improve its logistics and offer faster reaction times to SGM-Wuling requests. Up to now SGM-Wuling in Liuzhou was served by the MANN+HUMMEL Shanghai factory. The new factory will enable MANN+HUMMEL to take advantage of new business opportunities in China.

Just a few weeks ago, MANN+HUMMEL announced another highlight of its China business. In the area of industrial filtration, MANN+HUMMEL has won a new key account customer, SANY, one of the largest producers of construction machines in the world. SANY has chosen MANN+HUMMEL to be its strategic partner in the implementation of its globalisation strategy. Turnover with SANY should grow by 2018 up to a mid-double-digit million figure.

To face the challenges of the market and to turn growth targets into reality, MANN+HUMMEL is investing heavily in production capacity and personnel. There are different international training models for students and young professionals. One of the top models is the MANN+HUMMEL Engineering School in China, a co operation between MANN+HUMMEL and the Tongji University in Shanghai. It is an industrial-academic model, whereby the two partners established a joint technology lab for air and thermal management technology for the development of clean energy vehicles. Up to 15 bachelor and master students of Tongji University in their last year have the chance to join a training program which includes several months of real project work in the filtration specialist's international headquarters in Ludwigsburg, Germany.

In 1996, MANN+HUMMEL opened a small representative office in Shanghai and managed it from Singapore which at that time was the gateway to South-East Asia for many Western Companies. Today, MANN+HUMMEL’s footprint in China is continuously increasing. For the company and current and future employees, China offers many interesting business and career opportunities.
