ScandVane IFS-GT air intake system provides protection and optimises ship engine performance
MANN+HUMMEL VOKES AIR’s ScandVane IFS-GT air filter system will be on display at the forthcoming SMM 2014 in Hamburg. The intake system improves ship engine efficiency by allowing the use of air from the ambient environment as opposed to the hot and dirty engine room.
Speyer – September 9, 2014 – Filtration specialist MANN+HUMMEL, presents for the first time under the brand VOKES AIR their ScandVane IFS-GT air intake solution at the leading maritime trade fair SMM 2014 in Hamburg.
MANN+HUMMEL believe that the system’s ability to improve engine efficiency will be of most interest to visitors. Doug Hynd, Director of the Vokes Air Engineered Solutions business unit, explains: “In a traditional configuration, marine engines take air directly from the engine room, which although dry is often dirty and always warm. By removing the moisture, salt, dust and other pollutants, ScandVane IFS-GT allows the engine to utilise the cooler, ambient air found externally.
This temperature reduction is the bottom-line benefit to ship operators. The lower density of the cooler air yields significantly improved engine efficiency, especially given that the temperature difference is typically in the region of 25 °C.
ScandVane IFS-GT is an all-in-one system that removes water and dust particulate from intake air, protecting the ship engine from the damage caused by such airborne contaminants. Utilising a two-stage process, the first phase employs the ScandVane droplet separator to remove larger water particles from the air stream and continuously drain water away from the downstream engine.
The second stage calls on the company’s Macrogen GT Duo product – already extensively employed on the larger engines of the power generation industry. With a hydrophobic media, Macrogen GT Duo provides water separation and particle filtration in one, allowing two roles to be fulfilled by a single filter. And it is this dual function that the company says provides the real benefit to ship operators.
Hynd continues “Macrogen GT Duo’s ability to eliminate salt and other particulate matter as well as water from the combustion air stream is what sets it apart. Firstly, the compact form factor of the system facilitates the removal of a separate dust filtration stage meaning that the ScandVane IFS-GT can be installed in places previously impossible. Secondly, once installed the pressure drop of the system is reduced, boosting air flow and efficiency.”
In February 2014, MANN+HUMMEL, with headquarters in Ludwigsburg, acquired Vokes Air. The subsidiary based in the Swedish town of Svenljunga is a leading supplier of filtration solutions for HVAC and process air. The acquisition allows MANN+HUMMEL to participate in a new market segment with high potential. The new company was renamed to MANN+HUMMEL Vokes Air.
