New cyclone cells increase air cleaner performance and reduce running costs

At the 2014 InnoTrans in Berlin, the leading trade fair for transport technology, the international filtration specialist MANN+HUMMEL will present its new cyclone cells for air filtration. They achieve a pre-separation efficiency of up to 94% and at the same time lower pressure drop. They therefore offer a considerably higher performance than conventional cells. As a result, operators of railway vehicles benefit from longer service intervals, higher machine availability and lower running costs.

Speyer/Ludwigsburg, September 23, 2014 – at the 2014 Innotrans trade fair, the international filtration expert MANN+HUMMEL will present new cyclone pre-separators for air filtration in railway vehicles. The new centrifugal separators realise a separation efficiency of up to 94% with a lower pressure drop in comparison to conventional cells. In addition, they can be easily configured into a multi-cyclone arrangement for high flow rates. This increase in performance is made possible by the new geometry and the larger size of the individual cyclone cells.

This allows operators of diesel-driven vehicles to achieve lower running costs. The correct configuration of the pre-separator enables a service life more than ten times longer than is possible with conventional air cleaners. This reduces the service intervals and increases the vehicle availability. In addition, less fuel is required to run the vehicle.

Typical application areas are use as a pre-separator for applications with high dust loads upstream of an air cleaner or use as a stand-alone solution for the separation of coarse dust particles for the ventilation of the machine room or traction engines. MANN+HUMMEL offers a number of air cleaner solutions for railway vehicles such as systems with a combination of an integrated fine filter and pre-separator or  two-stage air cleaner systems with a customised design. In this case the fine filter is connected to the cyclone pre-separator via a ventilation system. This results in a total separation efficiency of up to 99.95%, which fulfils the high requirements for modern diesel engines used in traction units.
