MANN+HUMMEL Innovations at the IAA motor show

Double-digit growth for first half of 2011   o Turnover rose by approx. 20% to 1.2 billion euros (first half of 2010: 1 billion euros) o Result (EBIT) satisfactory despite high material costs o Employees worldwide increased by approx. 10% o IAA 2011: sustainable new products reduce emissions and protect the environment

Ludwigsburg, 2nd September 2011 - In the first six months of 2011 MANN+HUMMEL benefited from a healthy world economy and compared to the previous year increased the company group turnover by approx. 20% to 1.2 billion euros. At the same time the result (EBIT) developed satisfactorily. The number of employees in the compared time period increased by approx. 10% to 14,300.

"This means we are now significantly closer to our strategic aim of increasing turnover to 3.4 billion euros by 2018", explains Alfred Weber, CEO. "We have developed especially well in our home region of Europe and in Asia. There are risks associated with the long term economic outlook such as an economic recession, currency instability and higher commodity prices. These will slow down economic growth in the second half of 2011. But all in all we expect to record a satisfactory result this year."

MANN+HUMMEL supports the planned growth with a number of new developments, some of which the company will present at the 2011 IAA Frankfurt motor show. The new products are in line with the fair motto "Future comes as standard" and make a contribution towards sustainable mobility with conservation of resources.

3-stage water separator
The new 3-stage water separator from MANN+HUMMEL separates water droplets from fuel which are just a tenth of the diameter of a human hair. The water separator is part of the fuel system of modern common rail diesel injection systems. The requirements for water separation are high. The engine will wear out quicker if the fuel contains water.

Air/exhaust mixer for diesel engines
The new MANN+HUMMEL air/exhaust mixer for diesel engines helps protect the environment. It contributes to enable vehicles to meet the requirements of the Euro 6 emission standard already today. Euro 6 tightens the limit values for exhaust and will come into effect on September 1, 2014. From January 1, 2015 all newly registered vehicles will have to comply with the Euro 6 standard. Euro 6 reduces the currently applicable limits for nitrogen oxides (NOx) from 180 milligrams/kilometre to 80 milligrams/kilometre and particulates from 5 milligrams/kilometre to 4.5 milligrams/kilometre. Nitrogen oxides irritate the respiratory tract, encourage acid rain and form ozone. They are among the greenhouse gases. There are nitrogen oxide compounds, such as laughing gas, with a greenhouse effect approx. 300 times greater than CO2. The air/exhaust mixer is part of the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system and works in the low pressure range. This is a further advantage for customers and the environment because low pressure EGR systems require less energy and reduce nitrogen oxide over a wider engine load range than achieved by high pressure EGR systems. MANN+HUMMEL has started series production of the low pressure air/exhaust mixer for Renault.

Thermal management valve
The new electronically controlled thermal management valve, with a size of just 17.5 centimetres, goes one step further. It reduces CO2 emissions by two to three grams per kilometre. This is made possible by intelligent thermal management in the engine. The valve independently regulates up to three water cooling circuits depending on the conditions in any combination, such as between the cooling unit, cabin heating and engine.

Integrated plastic timing case cover
A new timing case cover in plastic lowers costs and is eco friendly. Plastic is cheaper than metal, is lighter and can be designed with a complex shape. This enables the integration of different functional parts into one system, in this case engine bearing, oil filter and oil cooler. This functional integration reduces the amount of material used and therefore reduces costs and lowers weight. Lower weight means less fuel consumption and less emissions. A further advantage for the customer is that functional integration and material substitution generally reduces the number of processing steps downstream.

Every year, MANN+HUMMEL invests approximately 4% of sales in research and development, which is well above the regional average. Part of the research budget is devoted to concepts, products and technology for alternative drive vehicles. The company is currently undertaking 10 projects in the electro-mobility field. At the same time, the filtration specialists continue to focus on optimising solutions for the combustion engine, which will remain the basis for individual and commercial mobility for many years to come. The focus in research and development has always been to offer sustainable and environmentally-friendly products. Respect for people and the environment is an essential corporate value.
