Clean solution: new plastic rotor for oil centrifuges
MANN-FILTER makes maintenance easier and ensures longer oil change intervals.
Ludwigsburg, June 30, 2025 – The global filtration expert MANN+HUMMEL has a long tradition in the development of innovative technologies. This now includes a new plastic centrifuge rotor, which is available as MANN-FILTER ZR 9008 z in IAM since May 2025 for the Scania G and P models.

Oil centrifuges are used in addition to the main flow oil filter and separate the finest impurities from the engine oil to reduce engine abrasion. With the global tightening of emissions regulations for diesel engines in commercial vehicles, the demands on the efficiency of oil filtration are also increasing. The newly developed rotor is designed to meet these requirements. It enables efficient particle separation, simplifies maintenance and supports longer service intervals. The plastic centrifuge rotor is already being produced by the Ludwigsburg-based filtration company as a series component for a renowned commercial vehicle manufacturer.
How does a centrifuge rotor work?
The centrifuge rotor is driven by the oil pressure in the engine and reaches speeds of up to 11,000 revolutions per minute. This creates centrifugal forces of more than 2,000 times the force of gravity, which effectively remove impurities from the intake air, metallic dirt particles from engine abrasion and soot from combustion from the oil. As these particles have a higher density than the oil, they are separated from the liquid and removed at the edge of the centrifuge. The higher the rotation speed, the more particles can be separated. The removed particles are stored in layers as a solid dirt cake on the inner wall of the rotor. The cleaned oil then flows back into the oil sump.
Easier to service
Daniela Knodel, Product Portfolio Manager at MANN+HUMMEL, explains: "The entire MANN-FILTER ZR 9008 z rotor is replaced during the inspection. This makes servicing much easier and ensures much greater cleanliness. It is a closed system in which the used unit is simply removed and a new one inserted. In comparison: The previous model had an opening system featuring a paper band that had to be removed during maintenance along with the adhering dirt. You can imagine that it was anything but clean."
The new plastic rotor ensures significantly longer oil service intervals. In order to maintain the full performance of the centrifuge and reduce abrasion of critical engine components, the rotor must be replaced regularly. The exact service interval depends on the specifications of the vehicle manufacturer.
Thanks to its metal-free design, the oil centrifuge with plastic rotor can be completely incinerated and is therefore easy to dispose of.
